Dear campaigners,
Ahead of this week's anniversaries of the US atomic bombings of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki, ICAN has today launched a major new report
titled _The Impact of Nuclear Weapons on Children [1]_.
The report shows that:
* In a nuclear attack, children are more likely than adults to die or
suffer severe injuries, given their greater vulnerability to the effects
of nuclear weapons: heat, blast and radiation.
* The fact that children depend on adults for their survival also
places them at higher risk of death and hardship in the aftermath of a
nuclear attack, with support systems destroyed.
* In Hiroshima and Nagasaki, children suffered in unique ways and out
of proportion to the rest of the population.
* Children living near nuclear test sites globally have also suffered
disproportionate harm as a result of radioactive fallout.
* Under international humanitarian law, governments have an obligation
to protect children in armed conflict. To fulfil this obligation, they
must take urgent action to eliminate nuclear weapons.
The webpage www.icanw.org/children [2] provides graphic depictions of
the specific horrors faced by young people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as
well as children living near nuclear test sites globally.
Thanks to ICAN Australia’s Jesse Boylan, we also have an audio version
of the report, which will air on 3CR community radio’s Radioactive
Show [3] in Australia.
We encourage you to share the report widely and to remember the children
of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as you commemorate the 79th anniversaries of
the attacks.
We have also prepared a video to make it easier to share this resource,
which we'll post on ICAN's social media accounts later today.
Kind regards,
Tim
